Changing a nappy is one of the most dreaded tasks when having a baby, but it need not be! By following these steps and with a little practice, you’ll be changing nappies successfully and it won’t be such a chore!
First, gather the supplies you need for the nappy change. You will need a fresh nappy, baby wipes, cotton balls and ointment. Next, lay the baby on a table specifically made for a nappy change on their back. If the table has safety straps, use them. Or, place the baby on the floor on a special changing pad. These are inexpensive at baby stores and can save space in a small room by avoiding the necessity of a changing table.
Next, unfasten the adhesive tabs on the sides of the nappy. Raise the baby’s legs up and fold the nappy to contain all the waste and dispose of it. Then, cleanse the baby’s bottom area with the wipes. Wipe from front to back to prevent infection. Make sure all the debris is cleaned off the baby.
Next, apply a bit of ointment to the cotton balls and apply generously over the baby’s skin. This ointment will help prevent rashes and make the baby’s skin feel better after being wet for a period of time.
Now slide a new, clean nappy under the baby’s bottom and align it so the tabs are in place. Pull the front of the nappy up over the baby’s belly and fasten the adhesive tabs. Make sure the nappy is fitting snugly in order to prevent leaks, but make sure it’s not too tight which can cause stomach problems for the baby. Move the baby off the changing table into a safe place and properly cleanse the surface of the table in order to ensure a sanitary space for the next changing.
