The basic 12 step programs for drug and alcohol addictions have been helping addicts for decades. While the 12 step program is certainly a well-meaning approach, many people needing help find they don’t agree with the fundamental elements of the program. The 12 step program was not completely successful with a broad range of addicts, many are now turning to non 12 step rehab to meet their recovery needs.
Before entering a drug rehab center, or finding a center for a loved one, you will want to see what the center believes regarding the 12 step approach. many 12 step programs place emphasis on the fact that addiction is never cured, just held in check. They also place emphasis on a higher authority, like God, which some people do not agree with.
It’s important to know what philosophy the long term drug rehab program you are considering follows. If you don’t believe in the basic fundamentals of a 12 step program, you probably won’t get much out of rehab. You should consider a non 12 step rehab center. Some people don’t like to be told they will always be “in recovery”, they would like a cure so they can get on with their lives. You must find a program for yourself or a loved one that can be followed, not one that conflicts with your beliefs.
